Beledweyne (HOL) - Heavy fighting was reported between Somali government forces backed by the local pro-government militia groups and al-Shabab militants on Tuesday morning in Yasoman and Berayabaal villages in Buulaburde district in the Hiiraan region.
The fighting began in the early hours of Tuesday morning when militants attacked army positions of the joint forces in the villages.
Both sides used heavy artillery during the conflict, and although the death toll was still unknown, casualties were expected.
However, the two villages are a strategic area for the movement of areas in the Hiraan region's east.
A delegation of Ministers and lawmakers from the Federal Government of Somalia led by the First Deputy Speaker of the Lower House, Sadia Yassin Hajji Samatar, visited Buulaburte district on Tuesday to show moral support for the joint army in the Hiiraan region.
Somali National Army (SNA) said Monday its forces killed more than 200 al-Shabab militants during the fighting in Jicibow village.
According to the state-owned media, the militants were planning to block the road between Beledweyne and Bulaburde district and stage an attack, but the forces received intelligence in time and foiled the attack.
