Mogadishu (HOL) - Ethnic Somali politicians from Kenya's North East region are gaining more clout in Kenyan President William Ruto’s government, particularly in the security sector.
The new president appointed several Somalis to high-level positions in Kenya's security agencies, which are the most important and sensitive.
Adan Barre Duale - Minister of Defence
President William Ruto appointed Aden Barre Duale, a Somali from Kenya, as the Minister of Defence, making him the only Somali among the 22-member Council of Ministers.
Aden Barre is a close friend and political ally of the new President of Kenya, William Ruto.
The last Somali to hold the powerful position was Mohamed Yusuf Haji, who was the Minister during the government of Mwai Kibaki. Haji served in this ministry from January 8, 2008, to April 26, 2013.
The Ministry of Defence of Kenya manages the national defence forces and is the second highest authority in the military. President William Ruto also holds the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces.
Aden Duale was born in 1969. He attended primary and secondary school in Garissa.
In 1992, he graduated from Moi University with his first degree from the Faculty of Education. In 2011, he graduated with a second degree from the College of Agriculture and Technology at Jomo Kenyatta University.
Nur Gabow - Acting Inspector General of Police
The National Council of the Kenya Police Service announced that Noor Gaabow had been appointed as acting Inspector General of the Police on October 7, 2022.
The statement added that Gabow will hold the position until a new commander is appointed.
When the results of the Kenyan elections were announced in August,
Nur Gaabow played an essential role this past August when he urged stakeholders to remain calm after chaos broke out in the tallying centre as votes were being counted.
Nur Gaabow joined the police in 1989 and has held several positions in the Kenyan police. Before becoming the Deputy Commissioner of Police, he was in command of the Police College.
He holds a master's degree in security, management and crime prevention.
Noordin Mohamed Yusuf Haji - Prosecutor General
Noordin Haji, the son of veteran politician Mohamed Yusuf Haji who served as the Minister of Defense of Kenya from January 8, 2008, to April 26, 2013.
Noordin Mohamed Haji was appointed by Uhuru Kenyatta, the former
President of the Republic of Kenya as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)
on the 28th of March, 2018 following an interview by the Public Service
Commission (PSC) and vetting by the National Assembly.
Noordin has already said that he has faced significant challenges from both internal and external forces, but they will not affect his work for the nation.
Amin Ibrahim Mohamed - Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
President Ruto appointed Amin Ibrahim Mohamed as the Director of the Kenya Criminal Investigation Department, abbreviated as DCI.
Amin will take over from George Kinoti, who resigned last month.
Amin is from Wajir and has worked as a senior detective for several years.
The National Police Service interviewed ten shortlisted candidates in a marathon event at the Kenya School of Government.
The three were submitted to the President, who then picked Amin as the successor.
