Somalia urges regional cooperation to combat climate change

Monday October 24, 2022

Djibouti (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the Climate Change Research Summit held in Djibouti on Sunday, where he displayed Somalia's plan to prevent deforestation and environmental erosion.

President Mohamud stressed the need for collective action and meaningful policy responses to mitigate the impact of climate change. He emphasized the importance of close regional cooperation.

"Somalia is in a drought after four consecutive rainy seasons failed due to climate change. We are focusing on addressing environmental degradation, which is at the root of the global problem of climate change. Recently we launched the Green Somalia National Initiative, which prioritizes plant care, re-greening the country and raising public awareness of protecting the environment," President said.

Somalia hopes to plant 10 million trees across the country to boost biodiversity and curb deforestation amid devastating droughts.

The conference, attended by delegates from both the international and regional levels, was put together for joint measures to deal with the effects of climate change in the region.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and his Djibouti counterpart, Ismail Omar Guelleh, jointly inaugurated the environmental research center in Djibouti.
