Death toll from twin Mogadishu bombings rises to 104

    Mogadishu (HOL) - The death toll from Saturday's terror attack in Mogadishu has climbed to 104, the mayor of Mogadishu said on Sunday afternoon.

    During a press conference, Yusuf Hussein Jimale Madale said 269 people were seriously injured in the twin-car bomb explosions at the Ministry of Education. 

    He called on the people missing family members or friends to visit local hospitals to help identify the bodies.

    He added that the government would investigate reports that volunteers were asked to pay for blood tests before donating blood to Saturday's terror attack victims.

    "We’re telling hospitals not to ask injured people or their families for money before treating them.”

    Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and mayor of Mogadishu Yusuf Hussein Jimcale Madale appointed separate emergency committees tasked with relief efforts for the victims.

    Hamza Abdi Barre appointed a ten-member committee that includes: Dr. Ali Haji Adan, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Sh Ali Member, Farah Sheikh Abdiqadir, Daoud Aweys Jama, Khadijo Mohamed Diriye, Abshir Mohamed Ahmed, Hirsi Jamac Gaani, Yusuf Hussein Jimale, Mahmoud Moalim Abdulle and Abdulkadir Abdullahi Farah.

    The committee was assigned to aid victims, search for missing people and coordinate emergency operations.

    No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts, although the Somali government has blamed the Islamist group al Shabab. The Al Qaeda-linked group does not claim attacks resulting in high civilian casualties.
