Mogadishu (HOL) - Al Shabaab fighters in central Somalia have destroyed a drinking well and two telecommunications towers in Galgadud, according to residents.
The attack happened just before midnight on Wednesday in the Adado district's Adakibir area.
Destroying wells and other vital civilian infrastructure has been a feature of Al Shabaab rule in rural areas, particularly as the group retreats further into the hinterlands during offensives.
Al-Shabaab fighters have already blown up water wells in about ten areas in the Hiiraan region's Matabaan and Mahaas districts and burned down houses in about seven locations in the Mahaas district.
The Galgadud region is one of the drought-affected areas, and the lack of accessible drinking water will undoubtedly aggravate residents' already precarious living situation.
On Thursday, Al Shabaab militants also injured at least nine people near the presidential palace in Somalia's capital.
