Somali army kills five al-Shabab militants in central region

    Dhusamareb (HOL) - Somali government forces killed five al-Shabaab militants in military operations in the central region on Saturday.

    The spokesperson for the country's Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Abdullahi Ali Anod, revealed that the operation took place in the villages of Giriley and Ali-Yabal in the Galgadud region after receiving intelligence about the militants were grouping up in the areas.

    General Anod added that the military forces successfully flushed out al-Shabaab members from the Jir-jir Hirey forests, situated between the Run-nirgod and Ali Helle areas in Middle Shabelle and Galgaduud.

    The spokesperson emphasized that the operation was carried out without causing harm to government forces.

    This operation transpired just one day after the Somali National Army, backed by international forces, killed more than 20 al-Shabab militants in a joint operation in the Kurtunware district of southern Somalia.

    In a brief statement Friday, the Ministry of Defense said that the operation, which took place at 3 a.m., local time Friday, targeted two houses where al-Shabab militants were assembling militias and explosives.
