Captain Shegow supporters protest in Mogadishu

Sunday August 20, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Supporters of former Somali military Captain Shegow Ahmed Ali flooded the streets of Mogadishu on Sunday, demonstrating against his recent arrest by the Somali police in the capital.

The protestors started their march from Dharkenley district, advancing toward Sayid Junction close to Villa Somalia, the Presidential Palace. The security guards of the Palace used live ammunition to disperse the demonstrators. No casualties have been reported.

The traffic flow along Maka Al-Mukarama, Mogadishu's busiest street, experienced a temporary halt during the protest, with participants voicing their grievances against the detained officer.

Somali police forces captured the former military captain Sheegow Ahmed Ali and 25 of his armed men following an hours-long security operation in Mogadishu on Friday night.

The police accused him of destabilizing the security of the capital and fighting against the security forces. The Police spokesman alleged that stolen mobile phones and fake bank notes were found in his home.

Several lawmakers representing Captain Shegow in the parliament have condemned the officer's arrest, arguing that he had been mistreated and demanding his immediate release.
