Puntland: Lawmakers expelled from parliament accuse the constitutional court

Monday August 21, 2023

Garowe (HOL) - Former Puntland lawmakers are accusing the regional constitutional court of causing unwarranted delays in deciding a case they filed with the court four months ago.

Speaking in Garowe on Monday, the parliamentarians were complaining about their removal from the parliament in 2020, asserting that the process had been carried out illegally. They maintained that the court should intervene and challenge the procedure that led to their expulsion from the parliament.

They emphasized that the court's chairman is facing pressure from external parties, impeding his ability to decide on their case.

In December 2020, the Puntland parliament stripped the membership of eight parliamentarians accused of violating the standing orders of the parliament. The Puntland High Court endorsed this parliamentary decision, and within a few weeks, these parliamentarians were replaced by others chosen by their respective tribes.

Since then, the former MPs have been contending that both the presidency and the leadership of the parliament worked in concert to eject them from the parliament. They assert that their removal from the house was primarily rooted in opposition to the regional President, Said Abdullahi Deni.
