Mogadishu (HOL) - SNA Infantry Commander General Mohamed Tahliil Bihi said that 117 Al Shabaab fighters were killed in the most recent operations in central Somalia's Mudug region.
On Friday, General Bihi told Somali state media that the insurgents were killed during an intense eight-hour gun battle near Doonyaale, a critical stronghold for Al-Shabaab.
"The al-Shabab were driven out of their trenches. We are currently pursuing the remnants that fled into the forest after the heavy loss," Bihi said.
The general added that a large contingent of Al Shabaab fighters has now been besieged in the South of the Mudug region and that operations are underway to flush them out.
In recent months, SNA-led military operations have made substantial progress in uprooting Al Shabab from major population centres throughout central and southern Somalia.
