Suspected al-Shabab militants killed three in Kenya

Saturday July 15, 2023

Kismayo (HOL) - Suspected al-Shabab militants killed two police officers and a teacher were killed, and others were injured early Friday in an attack on the Wargadud police camp in the Mandera South area.

According to the police, the terrorists also destroyed a telecommunications mast, disrupting general communication in the area. Additionally, the militants stole a police vehicle and an undisclosed amount of ammunition from the station.

The Wargadud police station in El Wak is a few kilometres away from the border with Somalia.

The police added that a military response team that tried to intervene was attacked with bombs at their camp in El Wak, adding that the terrorists escaped to the nearby border.

The incidents took place as Kenya's defense secretary, Aden Duale, is touring the northeastern region to meet security officials and residents, amid increasing al Shabab attacks in Kenya.

Last week, Kenyan security forces killed 23 suspected al-Shabab militants during an ambush at the Orgene area, in Kenya's Mandera County. The encounter also left six Kenyan soldiers dead and eight others injured.

On Thursday, al-Shabab fighters attacked a Somali military base handed over by Kenyan forces late last month as part of an African Union troop drawdown.

Somalia regional officials said early Thursday that the base in Geriley village in the Gedo region, about 12 kilometers from the Kenya border, was captured by militants.

However, on Friday, the Jubaland Darwish Forces recaptured the strategic base from al-Shabab militants.
