Sunday July 16, 2023

Dhusamareb (HOL) — United Nations' top official in Somalia, Catriona Laing, met with Galmudug's President Ahmed Abdi Karie 'Qoorqoor' on Friday to discuss state-building, local democracy, security, and plans to establish a regional UN office.

In their initial talks, they addressed the National Consultative Council process, with Laing emphasizing the necessity of including civil society, elders, women, and youth. "As Somalia continues state-building, it's vital to involve all parties in an inclusive dialogue," Laing said.

Laing praised President Karie's actions in creating a stable environment, notably retaking territory from Al-Shabaab. She emphasized the importance of bolstering military victories with stabilization efforts, which includes the establishment of local law enforcement.

"We've initiated a force of 400 local state police," Laing said, adding that the UN is committed to backing these efforts, and ensuring people have access to essential services to rebuild their lives.

Laing also announced progress on establishing a UN office in Galmudug, with land already secured in the state capital, Hero Drogo. This move is expected to enhance the collaboration between the UN and Galmudug.

"Establishing a physical presence will strengthen our partnership and enable various UN agencies, funds, and programs to contribute more effectively to the region's development," Laing concluded.
