Somali troops retake Goofgaduud Burey district from al-Shabaab

    Baidoa (HOL) - Somali government troops recaptured Goofgaduud Burey, a district located 30km west of Baidoa, on Wednesday after al-Shabaab briefly took control of it on Sunday.

    Residents reported that the Somali army entered the district without encountering militant resistance. The district had fallen to al-Shabaab after the withdrawal of Somali troops from the area.

    Goofgaduud Burey holds strategic importance as it serves as a defensive position for the Somali troops protecting Baidoa, the interim capital of the South West Regional State of Somalia.

    Al-Shabaab has been known to carry out serious attacks on the district, and once they capture it, they stay for an extended period.

    The recapture of Goofgaduud Burey occurred a day after the Somali National Army conducted an operation in the Wajid district of the Bakool region in southwest Somalia, killing 25 al-Shabaab militants, including five foreign fighters.
