Baidoa (HOL) - Heavy fighting erupted between al-Shabaab and Somali forces on the outskirts of Goofgaduud Burey, a district located 30km west of Baidoa, on Sunday. The battle comes just a week after the Somali army recaptured the district from al-Shabaab.
According to the residents, the two sides engaged in heavy artillery exchanges, resulting in unknown casualties.
Last week, the Somali government troops recaptured Goofgaduud Burey after al-Shabaab briefly took control of it.
The fight comes a day after the Somali National Army conducted a major operation on the border between the Middle Shabelle and Galgadud regions, killing at least 100 al-Shabab militants.
