Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed
spoke to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday evening to
congratulate him on his re-election.
In their conversation, President Mohamed reaffirmed the
commitment of the Somali government to fostering robust bilateral relations and
expressed a desire to further enhance collaboration in areas of mutual
interest.
President Mohamed expressed his confidence in President
Erdoğan's leadership, emphasizing that he believes Turkey will continue to make
remarkable progress across various development fronts. Both leaders pledged to
maintain close cooperation to effectively address shared challenges.
The enduring partnership between Somalia and Turkey is
marked by longstanding bilateral relations and extensive development
cooperation. Somalia has an embassy in Ankara, while Turkey maintains an embassy
in Mogadishu.
Last February, Somalia joined the international community in
providing aid support to assist victims of the Turkish earthquake.
Additionally, Turkey has been a steadfast supporter of the Somali government in
multiple areas, including offering budget support, contributing to education
initiatives, and assisting in the rebuilding of the Somali army.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won Turkey’s presidential
election, defeating opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu in Sunday’s runoff
vote and stretching his rule into a third decade.
With 99.43% of the votes counted, preliminary official
results announced by Turkey’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) on Sunday showed
Erdogan winning with 52.14% of the votes. Kilicdaroglu received 47.86%.
