KAMPALA, June 7 (Xinhua) - Uganda has received 1,800 refugees from neighboring Kenya where they have been living for the past two months, a government official said Wednesday.
John Paul Magezi, an assistant protection officer at the Office of the Prime Minister in Uganda, told Xinhua by telephone that the refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) had escaped from resettlement camps in Uganda and crossed into Kenya.
"We are relocating them back to their previous resettlement camps in various parts of Uganda," he said.
Magezi said the refugees were kept at a temporary refugee camp in Kenya until now.
"They have returned, and we are moving them in convoys to ensure that they are safe," Magezi said.
Uganda hosts over 1.5 million refugees, mainly from the DRC, South Sudan, Rwanda, Somalia and Eritrea, according to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR
