Fatal clash in Barawe sparks condemnation from federal lawmakers

Wednesday June 14, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Federal lawmakers elected from the South West condemned the recent clash between the federal military forces and Southwest Dervishes in Barawe, the administrative capital of the regional state.

During a press conference in Mogadishu on Wednesday, the parliamentarians accused Abdirahman Elmi Jim'ale, the commander of the Somali military army in Barawe, of being responsible for the clash. They emphasized that the commander opposes the existence of the South West regional state.

The lawmakers alleged that the African Union troops ATMIS handed over the town's airport to the military forces, and they also transferred a wounded soldier to the military, who they subsequently killed.

However, HOL has not independently confirmed these allegations.

Over ten people were killed in the fighting, but the lawmakers did not reveal the official casualties.
