Baidoa (HOL) - The deputy commissioner of social affairs for the Wanlaweyn district administration in the Lower Shabelle region, Haashim Shareere, was killed on Friday evening in southeastern Lower Shabelle.
The fatal attack, reportedly occurring in the village of Bula Hashi within the Wanlaweyn district roughly halfway between Baidoa and Merca., unfolded following an ambush on the vehicle Shareere was driving. He was returning from Mogadishu, where he had spent several days, to his district when his car was ambushed late yesterday.
Preliminary investigations point towards the involvement of unidentified armed factions in this attack. Early speculations indicate that the assault might be rooted in complex clan conflicts.
Despite the severity of the incident and the high-profile victim, neither the South West administration nor the Somali government has yet issued an official statement.
