Al-Shabab claims attacks on drug trafficking in Mogadishu

Wednesday March 1, 2023

Nairobi (HOL) - Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for killing at least ten people in separate attacks in two Mogadishu districts on Wednesday night. The militant insurgency group said the attacks targeted drug dealers, youth gangs, and bandits.

Al -Shabaab affiliated media said they attacked small shops selling drugs in the Yaqshid and Heliwa districts of Mogadishu.

The first attack targeted a location in the Ali Turcaye neighbourhood, killing four people.

The second attack occurred in the Godey neighbourhood of Yaqshid district, where Al-Shabaab militants claimed to have killed three people, who they said were youth gangs and armed men robbing the people.

Somali police have not confirmed whether the locations targeted by the Al-Shabaab have been identified as drug dens.

On Sunday, the group entered a small shop at the Fagax intersection in Mogadishu, killing two young men and injuring two others.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for killing a man they accused of being a drug smuggler in Mogadishu's Tabelaha Sheikh Ibrahim neighbourhood on Sunday night.

On Monday, the group also took credit for destroying a warehouse on the outskirts of Mogadishu that they claimed stored various drugs.

As attacks by criminal youth gangs increase in Mogadishu, security experts believe Al-Shabaab is attempting to gain favour with locals by acting as a vigilante law enforcement group.
