Beledweyne (HOL) - The Shabelle River flooded several villages in Beledweyne, the administrative town of Somalia's central region, on Tuesday.
The floods affected Koshin, Howlwadaag, and Bundaweyn villages after the river broke its banks, carrying a lot of water for the past few days. These same villages were also affected by floods in 2019.
According to reports, residents have already started to move from the town to the highlands on the outskirts of the city. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
On Monday, the chairman of the anti-flooding committee in Beledweyne warned about the potential flooding of the town due to the increased flow of water from the Shabelle River in Ethiopia and the spring rains in Ethiopia.
Despite the 64 dams built in the town to prevent flooding, the town has experienced submerging several times in recent years, proving ineffective in the current flooding crisis.
