Garowe (HOL) - SCC-Khatumo traditional elders have assumed the role of mediators in the election dispute between Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni and opposition groups.
Garad Jama Garad Ismail, representing the SSC regions, has on Friday affirmed their commitment to finding a resolution following the recent clash in Garowe, the capital of Puntland, where two soldiers lost their lives during clashes between security forces and clan militias.
The confrontation arose between security forces reportedly guarding election materials and clan militias opposing the upcoming local elections. The direct local council elections are scheduled for May 25, 2023.
"Garowe has made notable progress in terms of security and peace. We held discussions with President Deni in Qardho City and reached agreements. While the president is supportive, further deliberations on the elections will be conducted," Garad Jama Garad Ismail stated.
Garad Jama's statement comes in the wake of the Puntland administration issuing arrest warrants for four individuals, including former Finance Minister Hassan Shire Abgaal, alleging their involvement in the recent violent clash in Garowe. This incident heightened existing political tensions in the region.
The other wanted individuals included Khadar Abdirahman Faroole, the Somali Presidential envoy overseeing economic affairs, and politicians Mohamud Shiddo and Mohamed Jama Farah (Laysar).
