Kismayo (HOL) - A delegation led by Somali Prime Minister
Hamsa Abdi Barre arrived in Kismayo on Sunday to assess the humanitarian
situation resulting from the El-Nino floods and to accelerate anti-al Shabab
operations.
Jubbaland State President Ahmed Mohamed Islam, along with
the Vice Presidents and speakers of the regional parliament, warmly welcomed
the delegation at the airport.
According to the federal government, the Prime Minister's
visit to Jubbaland is aimed at observing the humanitarian impact of the El-Nino
floods, expediting the second phase of the operation to eradicate al Shabab,
launching development projects, and strengthening cooperation between federal
and state agencies in Jubbaland.
Jubbaland's Gedo region is among the areas severely affected
by the floods caused by El-Nino rains, where several people have been killed by
the Jubba River flooding.
The Somali National News Agency reported on Saturday that
the number of people killed by floods from heavy rains in Somalia has risen to
nearly 100. "Somalia's flood death toll climbs to 96," SONNA said in
a post on X, formerly Twitter, confirming the figure through Mahamuud Moallim,
the head of the country's disaster management agency.
