Gunmen kill prominent businessman in Beledweyne town

Thursday October 5, 2023

Beledweyne (HOL) - Gunmen killed prominent businessman Hassan Haji Dahir in the Howlwadaag neighbourhood of Beledweyne town on Wednesday night.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants who killed the businessman quickly fled the scene before security forces could arrive.

The motive behind the killing of the businessman remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility for the act. However, al-Shabab typically carries out such attacks, targeting both people in business and government officials.

The late Hassan Haji Dahir, also known as Hassan Nigeria, had recently been overseeing renovation work at the Warabole dam, one of the Beledweyne dam sites. This dam is crucial in preventing the Shabelle River from flooding the town.

Last May, floods displaced nearly a quarter of a million people after the Shabelle River in central Somalia breached its banks, submerging the town of Beledweyne. The Somali Disaster Management Agency reported that these floods in Beledweyne alone displaced over 245,000 people.
