Somaliland Urges Humane Treatment of Captives After Las Anod Battle

Friday September 1, 2023

HARGEISA, Somaliland - (HOL) Somaliland has reported that its captured troops experienced severe mistreatment during last Friday's conflict near the city of Las Anod.

A statement from the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that various social media platforms have been displaying images and videos showing soldiers undergoing significant abuse.

"Over the recent days, social media has been flooded with disturbing images and videos of Somaliland soldiers being subjected to brutal physical assaults and demeaning treatment," read the statement.

Somaliland has appealed to the international community to address this matter, urging all parties holding captives to treat them in line with international human rights standards.

Abdiqadir Ahmed Aw Ali Firidye, the leader of the SSC Khatumo executive council, asserted that all prisoners in their custody have been treated appropriately.

"We have ensured the humane treatment of all captives. I trust our forces and prison staff to prioritize the safety and well-being of the prisoners," commented Firidye.

In contrast, Garaad Mukhtar Garaad Ali Buraale voiced his concerns on Twitter about certain individuals circulating distressing videos, saying that these are not reflective of the broader situation.

"Our struggles will inevitably face challenges. While our troops have celebrated many successes, some choose to share content that's painful to witness. Understand that each video circulates like a metaphorical arrow aimed at our morale, our army, and our nation," Garaad expressed.

The skirmish last Friday near Las Anod resulted in Somaliland losing significant strategic points, with a notable amount of equipment, weaponry, and prisoners falling into enemy hands.
