Mogadishu (HOL) - Galmudug regional state lawmaker and Dhusamareb local council MP were killed in a roadside explosion in the Galgadud region on Monday, according to the Galmudug Presidency.
MP Mohamed Mohamud Ahmed (Mohamed Yare), a member of the Galmudug Parliament, and Abdullahi Ibrahim Shaaciye, a member of the Dhusamareb Local Council, were attacked in El-Garas town, where they come to visit the troops who had retaken the village from al-Shabab on Monday morning. The explosion also killed a person who was accompanying the
two MPs.
Government forces, supported by local militia, recaptured El-Garas, which lies 40 km from the ancient district of El-bur, without encountering any resistance.
The President of the Galmudug State, Ahmed Abdi Kariye, sent his condolences to the families of the lawmakers and the regional parliament, stating, "The two lawmakers were martyred while participating in the operation to chase the Khawariij in El-Garas town."
El-Garas is a small town located on the road between Dhusamareb and El-bur, and it has been under the control of al-Shabab for several decades. The recapture of El-Garas by government and local forces represents a significant step toward regaining control of the El-bur district.
