New York (HOL) - Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre met with US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar in New York City on Tuesday to discuss the country's political, security, economic, and social processes.
Prime Minister Barre briefed the lawmaker on the victories of the Somali National Army and local clan militia in military operations against al-Shabab in the country. Barre and Ilhan Omar also discussed how the US government can further strengthen its support for the government of Somalia.
The Prime Minister arrived in New York to attend the 78th UN General Assembly. Speaking at the SDG Summit 2023, PM Barre noted that Somalia is committed to increasing investments in education to reduce illiteracy rates, expand access to quality education, and promote technical and vocational training.
The Somali army, supported by local forces and international partners, has liberated several major towns and villages since President Mohamud declared a total war against al Shabab. The President is currently in Dhusamareb, the administrative capital of Galmudug, to intensify military operations in Galmudug and Hirshabelle.
