Somali President and UK Minister Collins discuss bilateral cooperation

Friday August 9, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and UK Minister for Africa Lord Collins spoke by phone on Wednesday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation.

The conversation focused on mutual goals and ongoing partnerships between Somalia and the United Kingdom. According to the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, President Mohamud discussed Somalia's political progress and environmental challenges, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration.

The UK has recently played a crucial role in Somalia's economic recovery by fully cancelling the country's historic debt. This decision, announced on April 10, 2024, followed the Paris Club's earlier agreement to forgive 99% of Somalia's debt. The move was part of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative to attract investment and foster economic growth in Somalia.

In addition to economic support, the UK has committed $2.8 million to assist Somali security forces through the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). This funding, announced on April 21, 2024, will provide essential non-lethal support, including rations, communication equipment, and medical evacuations.

During the call, President Mohamud and Lord Collins underscored the importance of continued collaboration to address Somalia's security and development challenges. The discussions highlighted the UK's ongoing support for Somalia's strategic objectives and its commitment to enhancing bilateral ties.
