Wednesday February 28, 2024

MOGADISHU (HOL) — Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre launched the Principles of Peace initiative on Wednesday, aimed at bolstering dialogue, reconciliation, and security across Somalia. This move underscores the government's commitment to national unity and stability.

During the initiative's unveiling in the capital, Barre emphasized the necessity of robust institutions and community engagement for sustainable peace and development. He highlighted Somalia's strides towards stability, asserting, "Our journey towards peace, development, and recovery is underway. Strengthening our governmental institutions is crucial for providing the services our citizens need for lasting peace."

The Prime Minister also addressed regional tensions, specifically criticizing Ethiopian territorial claims, signalling potential threats to peace. "Ethiopia's aspirations towards Somali territory are concerning. However, we remain steadfast on our path to peace," Barre stated.

The peace drive includes combating extremism, with a focus on dismantling the influence of the Al-Shabaab militant group. Barre called on Somali youth influenced by extremism to renounce violence and rejoin a peaceful society. "Our military efforts against Al-Shabaab are crucial for achieving enduring peace," he noted.

Barre urged all Somali sectors to contribute to peacebuilding and to refrain from actions that could destabilize the nation. He reaffirmed Somalia's dedication to amicable relations with neighbouring countries while maintaining a firm stance on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The event, supported by local and international bodies, marks a pivotal step in Somalia's concerted effort to foster a stable and thriving nation.
