Puntland presidential candidates to address parliament ahead of the poll

    Garowe (HOL) - Twenty-two candidates running for president and vice president of Puntland regional state will deliver their campaign speeches during the parliamentary session in Garowe on Sunday.

    Somalia's semi-autonomous northern state of Puntland is scheduled to hold its election in Garowe on Sunday, with all candidates asserting to the lawmakers that they will accept the election results.

    Political analysts believe that the incumbent President, Said Abdullahi Deni, has a high probability of returning due to his influence on the process of electing the new parliament. He has been accused of making an unprecedented intervention.

    On Thursday, the new lawmakers selected Abdirisakh Ahmed Said Farah as their new speaker after securing 37 votes in the first round of the election, forcing the three other candidates to withdraw.

    The new speaker, a former chairman of the Puntland electoral committee, is considered to be one of the closest associates of the incumbent President Deni. Despite opposition from candidates, they supported the new speaker.
