KAMPALA (HOL) - At the 19th Summit of NAM Heads of State and Government, Somalia's State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, commended Azerbaijan for its effective chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The meeting between Omar and Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Uganda's capital focused on establishing bilateral ties, which were historically limited in scope, and enhancing regional cooperation.
Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan's contribution to education, offering scholarships to students from NAM and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, benefiting a notable number of Somali students. He also acknowledged Somalia's support for Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The talks highlighted both countries' dedication to enhancing cooperation within NAM's framework, focusing on mutual understanding and cooperation among its members.
This latest meeting builds on previous interactions between Azerbaijan and Somalia. In July 2023, officials from both countries met during the NAM Coordinating Bureau's ministerial meeting. There, Bayramov emphasized the importance of increasing mutual contacts to foster bilateral cooperation. The meeting concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations.
