Somali President vows to finalize constitution amid political discussions

Friday January 26, 2024

Garowe (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has expressed strong support for Parliament's passage of the resolution outlining procedural rules for amending the country's constitution, pledging to finalize the long-awaited document.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Puntland State leaders in Garowe on Thursday, President Mohamud emphasized that any changes made to the constitution will only take effect with the election of the next government. He underscored the importance of having an official constitution for the country.

The president stated that the process of amending the constitution will persist until a referendum is held, reiterating his government's readiness to engage in discussions with all concerned parties on issues affecting the country's destiny.

"Political issues necessitating negotiation between the federal government and the member states are being discussed and presented to the Parliament. Disputes exist in political matters," said President Hassan Sheikh.

President Mohamud's statement followed a joint session of the two Houses of the Federal Parliament approving the process of amending the Constitution on Wednesday in Mogadishu.

Despite adopting the Somali Provisional Constitution in 2012, a range of challenges has delayed the envisaged four-year comprehensive constitutional review. Former Lower House speaker Mohammad Osman Jawari commended the current administration for reaching preliminary agreements on vital issues but cautioned that unresolved matters persist, which requires widespread agreement for any constitutional amendments.
