Somali government welcomes ICJ ruling in Israel's genocide case

Saturday January 27, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali government has welcomed the recent decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to assert primary jurisdiction in investigating Israel's commission of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

"This landmark ruling marks a significant step towards accountability for the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people. Somalia stands firm in demanding the immediate implementation of temporary measures to safeguard the rights and well-being of Palestinians, with a primary focus on halting Israel's egregious acts of violence, subjugation, and destruction aimed at the physical and moral obliteration of innocent lives", the Somali government said in a statement released on Saturday.

Somalia emphasizes the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further loss of innocent civilian lives. The Federal Republic of Somalia underscores the imperative for Israel to cease all forms of brutal violence against Palestinians and adhere to the measures outlined by the ICJ's decision.

The Federal Republic of Somalia added that it remains steadfast in its solidarity with the Palestinian people and will continue to advocate for peace, justice, and the realization of their fundamental rights on the global stage.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague delivered its ruling on Friday on the emergency measures requested by South Africa in its genocide case filed against Israel over its war on the Gaza Strip. The court ordered Israel to take "all measures within its power" to prevent genocide in Gaza.

When it filed its case at the ICJ last month, South Africa argued that Israel's military actions in Gaza "are genocidal in character" and in breach of the 1948 UN Genocide Convention.
