Thursday July 4, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) United States President Joe Biden has commended the Somali government's achievements in rebuilding governance and congratulated the people and government of Somalia on the 64th anniversary of their independence.

The United States Embassy in Somalia conveyed President Biden's congratulatory message to Somali government leaders on Tuesday. In his message, President Biden expressed warm wishes from the American people and highlighted the strong partnership between the United States and Somalia.

"As critical partners, our nations are working together to build a better world for our children and children everywhere," President Biden stated. "The United States stands with Somalia in its continued efforts to advance security, build inclusive economic growth, promote governance reform and human rights, and tackle climate shock and drought."

President Biden also acknowledged Somalia's recent election to the UN Security Council as a significant achievement, reflecting Somalia's progress and the international community's confidence in the country's future.

He expressed eagerness to strengthen the partnership between the two governments and the enduring friendship between their people, particularly as Somalia assumes security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

On the other hand, the Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan, congratulated the Somali people and government on the 64th anniversary of their country's independence.

"Hambalyo! Today's celebration is an opportunity for all Somalis to take pride in the progress being made," said Mr. Swan. "On behalf of the UN family in Somalia, I reaffirm the UN's support for working closely with Somalia's people and their leaders to build a peaceful, stable, inclusive, and prosperous Somalia."

The anniversary celebrations in Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia included cultural performances, parades, and reflections on the nation's progress and challenges since gaining independence.
