Mogadishu (HOL) - Prominent Somali religious leader Sheikh Osman Sheikh Omar, better known as Sheikh Osman Hiddig, passed away in Mogadishu on Saturday at the age of 82.
Sheikh Osman Hiddig was a leading Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’a scholar and educator. Over the last decades, he ran religious learning centers in Mogadishu and his hometown, El-Dheer, in the Galgudud region.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, along with government officials, politicians, and religious scholars, expressed their condolences for the death of Sheikh Osman Hiddig, who will be buried in the Kaaraan district of Mogadishu.
President Mohamud described the deceased as a great scholar, preacher, and teacher who was central to teaching and spreading Islam. He invested a lot of time and effort in producing scholars with extensive knowledge of the Islamic religion, benefiting future generations in the country.
"Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilahi Rajicun. May God have mercy on Sheikh Osman Sheikh Omar and Sheikh Daoud. He was a hardworking scholar who spent a lot of time teaching and spreading the Islamic religion. He produced many Somali scholars who play a significant role in spreading the faith today," said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Sheikh Osman Hiddig's funeral is currently underway in Mogadishu. He will be buried in a cemetery near the Shifa mosque in the Karaan district.
