Wednesday June 5, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia's Armed Forces Court has sentenced Mohamud Mohamed Macalin, known as Karama, to eight years in military prison. Moalim was identified as a member of the Al-Shabaab group and was found responsible for extorting money from businesses in Mogadishu.

The court revealed that Macalin collected extortion money for the terrorists by providing information to the Khawarij about newly opened shops in several districts, including Hamar Weyne, Hamar Jajab, Waberi, Hodan, Howlwadaag, and Bondhere. He threatened businesses and extorted money, he also reported the estimated value of properties, the number of shops, and their names to the Al-Shabaab network.

Macalin received a salary of $200 every three months from Al-Shabaab. Security forces arrested him in January 2024.

The sentence follows a recent decision by the Banadir Regional Court, which sentenced a 70-year-old man to seven years in prison and fined him $3,000 for transferring half a million dollars to Al-Shabaab.
