Somali forces capture strategic Ruunirgood from Al-Shabaab

    Mogadishu (HOL) — The Federal Government of Somalia announced that Somali government forces took full control of Ruunirgood on Sunday. The area is strategically located on the border of the Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions.

    For several days, troops have been conducting operations in Ruunirgood, previously held by Al-Shabaab. According to the military officials, they are currently carrying out minesweeping operations, as Al-Shabaab left mines behind during their retreat.

    "The Somali National Army has launched attacks from several directions in the Ruunirgood District, taking over this district on the border of Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions. The military is also conducting investigations in the city," a government press release stated.

    The government did not report any casualties or provide details on the whereabouts of Al-Shabaab members who had been in the area.

    Ruunirgood's capture is significant for government forces. Al-Shabaab used it as a launching pad to organize operations between the Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions.
