Friday March 1, 2024

NAIROBI (HOL) – Brigadier Seif Salim Rashid has officially taken command of the Kenyan contingent within the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), replacing Brigadier William Kamoiro, announced the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Thursday.

The leadership change, marked by a ceremony at the ATMIS KDF Headquarters in Dhobley, Somalia, comes as part of the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region plagued by insurgent activities. Brig. Rashid vowed to uphold and advance the mission's objectives, focusing primarily on the security and welfare of the Somali populace.

Brigadier Kamoiro, in his outgoing speech, highlighted the significant achievements under his command, including the successful pacification of the Jubaland area and the enhancement of civilian safety. He commended the collaborative operations with Somali Security Forces that have notably disrupted and degraded Al-Shabaab's capabilities.

Kenyan troops have been deployed in Somalia since October 2011 and are expected to remain until the ATMIS mandate's conclusion in the end of 2023.
