Luul Abdiaziz laid to rest near Mogadishu after tragic death

Friday March 8, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Hundreds of people attended the funeral prayer for Luul Abdiaziz, who was burned to death by her husband in Mogadishu in January 2024. The victim was buried in Jazeera village on the outskirts of Mogadishu on Friday.

The body of the deceased had been kept in the freezer at Digfeer Hospital for more than a month after her father refused to bury his daughter until justice prevailed.

On Wednesday, the Banadir Regional Court sentenced Sayid Ali Moalin Daoud to death after finding him guilty. During the trial, Daoud admitted to starting the fire after a dispute with his wife but denied intending to kill her, disputing the murder charges against him. The prosecution presented evidence, including the charred remains of Abdiaziz's phone and testimonies from eyewitnesses, including her children, to bolster their case against him.

The murder occurred amid growing public protests against domestic violence in the country. The surge in violence prompted Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to meet with Mogadishu police to discuss legal reforms and enhance women's safety.
