Somali Council of Ministers approves nine-member National Media Council

Thursday March 14, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somali Council of Ministers approved the appointment of the nine-member Somali National Media Council during their weekly meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday.

This decision follows the country’s parliament passing the media law, subsequently signed by the President.

The appointed members of the council are as follows:

1. Abdirahman Mohamed Adan (Koronto)
2. Mohamed Shil Hassan Shil
3. Muna Omar Hassan
4. Yusuf Hassan Mursal
5. Ahmed Mohamed Abdi
6. Mohamed Abdullahi Koshin
7. Hinda Dahir Jama
8. Abdulkadir Osman Abdisalan
9. Fatuma Yusuf Said

Establishing the National Media Council marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s commitment to media freedom and promoting a pluralistic media environment.

However, the approval of the media council coincides with the tragic death of Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan, a prominent journalist and community leader in Abudwak, Galgaduud region, who was shot dead by an armed guard at an orphanage center he managed.

Somali media organizations advocating for media safety have demanded swift justice for his murder, which occurred last night, resulting in severe head injuries. The motive behind the killing remains unknown, although there were reported conflicts between Bulhan and the security guard at the facility.

The Council of Ministers also passed the Official Data Bill and ratified a tax agreement with the United Arab Emirates to prevent double taxation and tax evasion.
