ADDIS ABABA (HOL) —Abdi Mohamed Omar, known as Abdi Iley, the former president of Ethiopia's Somali region, recently reflected on the region's administration and the nation's reconciliation efforts following his six-year detention. His release is part of Ethiopia's ongoing initiatives to address longstanding ethnic tensions.
Reflecting on his release, Iley said, "My freedom is a testament to God's grace and the mercy shown by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during Ramadan." He also acknowledged the Ethiopian government's role, stating, "The Office of the General Prosecutor's decision to drop our cases is a significant step towards healing and reconciliation in our country."
Iley, whose tenure was marred by allegations of human rights abuses during the 2018 Jijiga unrest, remains a divisive figure. Yet, he expressed a strong connection to the Somali region and its leadership: "I remain committed to the Somali region and fully support President Mustafa Cagjar's leadership."
He expressed gratitude to those who facilitated his release, saying, "I owe a great deal of thanks to the traditional elders of the Somali region and community leaders like Saladin Ugasyad for their invaluable support during my detention."
The reaction to Iley's release has been mixed, with the Somali Regional Government and opposition parties yet to issue formal statements. The varied responses highlight the complexities of Ethiopia's reconciliation process.
Iley currently resides in Addis Ababa with his family.
Regarding his future plans and potential return to Jijiga, Iley remained non-committal: "My current focus is on reconciliation and contributing positively to our country's future. As for returning to Jijiga, time will tell."
