Friday March 22, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — The Somali government released 116 inmates from Central Prison in Mogadishu and MBCC Prison in Ex-Control Afgoye town on Thursday, following President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's granting of a presidential amnesty in honor of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The Office of the Attorney General announced that the released inmates had committed minor offences, and some had already served most of their sentences in the prisons.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Farhan Hussein Mohamed thanked the President for his compassionate decision. "This amnesty reflects our nation's dedication to justice and rehabilitation. It provides an opportunity for you to reintegrate into society and make positive contributions," Mohamed stated.

The beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty, predominantly young men, were provided with access to free medical care, educational opportunities, and recreational facilities during their incarceration.
