Somali government congratulates Somaliland's peaceful elections

Saturday November 16, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation has commended Somaliland for conducting peaceful presidential and party elections, with over one million registered voters participating.

In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry praised the stability and organization of the electoral process, emphasizing the Somali government's commitment to empowering its people and advancing peaceful, one-person, one-vote elections across Somalia.

"The Ministry which has been closely monitoring the presidential and party elections in Somaliland, congratulates the administration on the peaceful atmosphere and stability during the elections," the statement read. The Ministry further highlighted the electoral registration, campaign period, voting process, and the National Electoral Commission's (NEC) confidence-building measures as reflections of political maturity and tolerance.

International observers have also lauded Somaliland's National Electoral Commission for overseeing a transparent and peaceful election. A delegation of diplomats, including representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, and several European nations, visited more than 30 polling stations in Hargeisa, Borama, Berbera, and Gabiley.

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized internationally, continues to work towards democratic governance as part of its quest for global legitimacy.
