Mogadishu prepares for universal suffrage elections in 2026

Friday November 22, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Banadir region's 20 districts are gearing up for one-person, one-vote elections in 2026, according to Deputy Commissioner of Security and Politics Mohamed Ahmed Diriye Yabooh.

Speaking in Mogadishu on Thursday, Yabooh affirmed the administration's readiness, noting that preparations include identifying ballot box locations and strengthening security in the capital.

"The Banadir Regional Administration has always been an active participant in the National Consultative Forum meetings," Yabooh said, emphasizing their commitment to advancing Somalia's electoral framework.

The statement followed a meeting on Wednesday between Mogadishu Mayor Yusuf Hussein Jimale Madaale and Somalia's interim parliamentary committee on electoral laws. During the discussions, the committee pledged to incorporate recommendations from Banadir's administration into the final electoral law, which will guide future elections and formalize the national electoral commission.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reiterated the federal government's determination to implement universal suffrage by 2026, calling it a pivotal step for Somalia's democratic development.
