Leaders of Somalia's federal and regional administrations meet during the National Consultative Council (NCC) discussions in Mogadishu this week, focusing on key national issues including security, governance, and economic development.
Hargeisa (HOL) — The interim administration of SSC Khaatumo has formally requested representation in the ongoing National Consultative Council meetings in Mogadishu. The administration argues that, as a recognized federal entity under Somalia's government, it is entitled to participate in discussions shaping the country's future.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, SSC Khaatumo appealed to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other members of the National Consultative Council to allow their participation in future high-level talks.
These meetings, which focus on national issues such as security, governance, and the economy, typically involve Somalia's federal leaders, regional state representatives, and the Banaadir Regional Administration.
The demand comes after the people of SSC Khaatumo, situated in a historically disputed region, declared their intent to establish their administration within Somalia's federal framework earlier this year. SSC Khaatumo was recognized as an interim federal administration by the Somali government in October 2023. The administration emphasized that its exclusion undermines the representation of its people and its right to have a say in the nation's governance.
"We cannot stand by while discussions that directly shape our political and economic future proceed without our voice," the administration's statement declared. "SSC Khaatumo must be given the representation it deserves."
The leadership of SSC Khaatumo expressed frustration at being left out of discussions that have far-reaching consequences for their region. They pointed out that the National Consultative Council is responsible for decisions that will chart Somalia's future course, including security strategies, economic policies, and federal relations.
"SSC cannot afford to have outsiders make decisions about our land and people while we watch from the sidelines."
