Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe withdraws from National Consultative Council meeting

Monday October 7, 2024

Kismayo (HOL) – Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe returned to Kismayo on Monday after reaching a consensus at the ongoing National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting in Mogadishu failed.

Madobe's withdrawal from the talks reportedly stemmed from his refusal to proceed without including Puntland and Khatumo in the discussions. He argued that their absence would make it impossible to hold credible elections nationwide.

The departure of the Jubaland leader is seen as a major setback for the NCC, which has yet to officially announce the conclusion of the six-day meeting in the capital. The meeting discussed crucial topics such as upcoming federal and state elections, reconciliation efforts, and improving cooperation between the federal government and regional administrations.

Puntland's Vice President, Ilyas Lugatoor, supported Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe's proposal to include Puntland in the ongoing National Consultative Council (NCC) meetings in Mogadishu.

"I commend the President of Jubbaland, Ahmed Madobe, for his position at the Mogadishu meeting as he rejected the exclusion of Puntland and Khatumo," said Vice President Lugatoor.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's office has yet to comment following Madobe's return to Kismayo, though the NCC talks are reportedly continuing in Mogadishu.
