Somaliland lawmaker accuses government of imprisonment to disrupt upcoming elections

Monday October 7, 2024

Hargeisa (HOL) – Somaliland lawmaker Mohamed Abib Yusuf has accused the Somaliland government of arresting him to create chaos in the Awdal region to disrupt the upcoming elections and extend its term in office.

Speaking to the media on Monday after his release from Mandera prison, MP Abib stated that his imprisonment was unjustified and a tactic to delay the elections while fostering instability in Awdal.

“The government had great ambitions for my imprisonment. They wanted to create problems in Awdal similar to the conflict in Las Anod. Their goal was to deny the election and put my region in a state of insecurity,” he asserted.

Despite the government’s intimidation, Abib emphasized that it would not change his political beliefs. “I am ready to die for the opinion that I believe in, but I don't want to kill anyone,” he added. He thanked the people of Awdal for their support and restraint during his imprisonment.

MP Abib was incarcerated for 30 days under accusations of treason, which the High Court later dismissed, leading to his release last week.
