Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur and Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler signed a financial agreement on defense cooperation to enhance Somalia’s defense capabilities.
Delegations from Mogadishu and Ankara attended the signing ceremony in Turkey on Monday, noting that the agreement would strengthen Somalia’s defence infrastructure and bilateral relations.
Somali state-owned media reported that the new pact aims to fortify Somalia’s security apparatus while promoting deeper diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
The new defense cooperation follows a recent agreement between Turkey’s state-owned energy company, TPAO, and Somalia’s Petroleum Authority, allowing onshore oil and gas exploration.
Türkiye’s seismic research vessel, Oruç Reis, arrived at Mogadishu seaport on Friday to commence offshore surveys for oil and natural gas, further advancing Somalia’s resource exploration efforts.
