Somaliland presidential candidates pledge fair and transparent election

Saturday September 14, 2024

Hargeisa (HOL) —Somaliland's presidential candidates have vowed to ensure a transparent and law-abiding election campaign, pledging their commitment to the electoral commission's regulations.

On Saturday morning, President Muse Bihi Abdi of the Kulmiye party, Waddani's Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, and Faisal Ali Warabe of UCID received official certification to run. Their promises come as concerns grow about electoral disputes in the region, stressing the importance of a peaceful and fair contest in Somaliland's democratic process.

"The stage is set for the election. We will compete, and we are ready to accept any decision made by the commission," said Irro.

President Bihi, acknowledging the commission's role, advised caution to avoid any missteps that could draw criticism. "We are elder statesmen who have gone through elections. An elder who refuses advice is a liability. We are fully aware of the country's laws and need no reminders," he asserted, emphasizing his commitment to the electoral process.

Faisal Ali Warabe also called for restraint among the candidates and their supporters, urging avoidance of inflammatory rhetoric that could fuel tensions during the campaign period.

The certification marks the candidates' formal entry into the race.
