Mogadishu (HOL) — The European Union has extended the mandates of Operation Atalanta and the EU Training Mission (EUTM) Somalia until February 28, 2027.
Announced in December, the extension also includes the EU Capacity Building Mission (EUCAP Somalia). It follows a review to bolster the EU’s response to emerging security challenges in one of the world’s most geopolitically significant regions.
The EU said that Operation Atalanta will continue its mission to combat piracy and disrupt illicit activities along the Somali coast, the Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea.
The operation will strengthen collaboration with Operation Aspides, which guards commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
The Maritime Security Centre Horn of Africa (MSC-HOA) coordinates naval operations and will be renamed the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean to reflect its expanded role.
Operation Atalanta has been active since 2008.
On land, EUTM Somalia says it will provide strategic advice and training to Somali security forces, while EUCAP Somalia will assist with maritime law enforcement and policing.
Under the European Peace Facility, Somali forces will continue to receive EU-funded equipment and logistical support. The EU’s missions will also collaborate with Djibouti.
The next review of the EU’s presence in the region is expected before the new mandates expire in 2027.
