Addis Ababa (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Addis Ababa on Friday afternoon to participate in the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) Summit, which is set to commence on Saturday.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Industry, Melaku Alebel, welcomed the Somali delegation to Bole International Airport ahead of high-level discussions expected to dominate the summit.
This year’s AU gathering brings together African leaders seeking fresh approaches to addressing ongoing conflicts across the continent. The wars in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are expected to take center stage. During the summit, the AU Commission is also scheduled to vote for a new chairperson.
President Mohamud is also scheduled to hold sideline meetings with fellow African heads of state to discuss Somalia’s political and security challenges, including the fight against al-Shabaab, ongoing electoral reforms, and efforts to strengthen regional cooperation.
