Mogadishu (HOL) — A police officer fatally stabbed his station commander at the Mohamed Mooge Police Station in Hargeisa on Tuesday, authorities said, marking a rare case of internal violence within Somaliland's law enforcement.
Captain Cabdi Cali Nuur was attacked while carrying out his duties, according to a statement from the Somaliland police. Officials described the killing as a "shocking and deliberate act" carried out by a fellow officer from the same station.
"Captain Cabdi Cali Nuur, the commander of the Maxamed Mooge Police Station, was brutally murdered today while on duty," the police said in a statement.
The suspect was swiftly arrested and is currently in police custody. Authorities said he would be presented before the Military Court but did not immediately disclose a possible motive for the attack.
Somaliland's police chief, deputy commanders, and senior officers have extended condolences to the public and members of the police force.
While violent incidents within the police force are rare, the killing raises questions about internal discipline and law enforcement oversight in Somaliland. The incident has sparked discussions on the need for stricter internal monitoring and the psychological evaluation of officers to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
